After 8 years of postgraduate informal art training under established masters in the arts like Demas Nwoko, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Ovraiti, and Ezenwa et al, Phillip Nzekwe emerged with the Akademik studios of art.
Philip was born in Jos, Nigeria. He currently lives and works in Lagos and Asaba. Trained at the Delta State University (2002) and University of Benin (2007) where he obtained a bachelors and a Master’s degree in fine art.
His artistic technique which is inspired by traditional African art and architecture, tropical colours and contemporary 3D animated images, is used to investigate complex human behavioral patterns within societal context. He thinks himself a student of nature.
He has participated in several artist workshops including; Harmattan, Triangle trust and The US. Embassy environmental workshops.
Nzekwe has several commissioned projects, a triangle trust artist in residence (2012-2013), Ebedi artist/writer in residence (2015).
Phillip has exhibited both locally and international. His works can be found in prestigious private and institutional collections like the Gulf Bank Qatar, and Delta State house of assembly complex Asaba amongst others. His works are featured in several publications like the East Africa magazine and are included in royal collections.
